What to Expect From Freight Technology

One of the hottest topics at expos, in blogs, and around the freight terminals is the future of technology in the freight industry. We are now seeing the potential for electric vehicles, the arrival of blockchain, self-driving trucks, and more industry changes that have the industry fluttering with predictions and guesses about its future. For what many think of as an 'old-fashioned' trade, technology is making a lot of improvements in how people ship freight.

Is Technology Making the Freight Industry Better or Worse?

In 2018 it was mandated that all truck drivers were to adopt the ELDs (Electronic Logging Devices) for the first time. No longer was it acceptable to maintain logs on a piece of paper. This new system received a lot of criticism, as those opposing ELD usage did not like the initial fees needed to change their systems. They also did not like having annual maintenance costs for these devices as the added costs impacted profits for smaller fleets and owner-operators.

These complaints were a bit exaggerated, however, and even the capacity shortage in the devices didn't materialize that many thought would bring the world of freight to a stop. For most freight companies, the business has continued as it always did, and the benefits of the ELDs far outweigh any negative ones. The industry is seeing safety improve, better privacy standards, and faster roadside inspections.

Blockchain in the Freight Industry

Blockchain in the freight industry gives better visibility, more accountability, and faster transactions across large distances. When a freight company uses blockchain in its supply management, they are able to bridge the expanse between land, air, and sea with the ability to connect shippers to information about goods. Blockchain makes tracking easier and there is a permanent link and visibility of items to code to cut down on lost pallets, products, and revenue.

Software Technology in the Freight Industry

Software products all differ a little, but most freight software provides a few common features.

  • Quoting

    • The quoting feature sends freight details to multiple carriers so are able to choose how to ship freight to best meet your needs. In a situation where a carrier is not able to provide an instant quote, the software will automatically send the logistics and shipment information to other carriers to find a quote.

  • Tracking

    • The tracking feature shows where freight is and when it is expected to be delivered. Basic freight software will save the tracking number, or it may need to be re-entered manually. Advanced software systems can automatically update the shipment information and include the customer in the tracking process. This process can even send notifications to the shipper and the customer with any changes.

  • Booking

    • The booking feature on freight software can reserve space on boats. These systems can even prepare the documentation needed for the shipment.

  • Manage Inventory

    • The inventory management feature is offered on more comprehensive software systems. This feature is used for moving large numbers of freight and helps keep track of all shipments so none are lost. The inventory management feature is also used to ensure warehouse space is used efficiently so couriers can move freight easier and on time.

Freight industry software streamlines the process of moving freight between the shipper, the carrier, brokers, and the customer or recipient more efficiently with reduced costs.
